Update on Alex's Fight Against Leukemia

Sunday November 23, 2003

Hi Everyone,

For the most part I have tried to keep politics off of Alex Update, but I'm going to make an exception for the 2003 Energy Bill. I was against the bill even before I found out that it contained a provision to protect firms that make and distribute MTBE from lawsuits.

Now that I know of this provision I am even more vehemently opposed to the 2003 Energy Bill. As all of you know Alex was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) at the age of 10 months. At the time we were living in California, the only state that required MTBE to be in all gasoline sold. The cause of Alex's Leukemia is unknown, but a chief suspect is an environmental contaminant, and MTBE is a known carcinogen that was present in our water supply.

It's hard for me to believe that the Bush Administration and the majority of Congressional Republicans want to protect these firms, especially when they knew early on that MTBE was a carcinogen and posed a threat to the water supply.

There were 6 Republicans, 32 Democrats and 1 Independent who deserve high praise for voting against the bill. They are:

Republicans:

  • Lincoln Chafee (R.I.)
  • Susan Collins (Maine)
  • Judd Gregg (N.H.)
  • John McCain (Ariz.)
  • Olympia Snowe (Maine)
  • John Sununu (N.H.)

Hi Everyone,

As usual, sorry it's taken so long since the last update. It's been another tough month.

MadiOn Tuesday, Oct. 28th, Madi passed away. Nick and I were able to see the Mitchem's while down in California. It was a wonderful visit with lots of hugs and kisses for both of us from the princess. The day after we saw them, Madi was scheduled to have a lump removed from her back. The biopsy revealed that the lump was a leukemic tumor. Within a few days of the biopsy, Madi started to have seizures. A CAT scan showed another tumor in the brain that was growing at a very rapid rate. Mike, Marian and Mikey made sure Madi's last weeks were filled with lots of love, trips to amusement parks and happy times with her family. Madi was such a beautiful, happy little girl that lit up any room she entered. She was my sweet little angel. Mike and Marian handled Madi's life and death with amazing faith, grace and strength. It is no wonder that Madi was such a special child because she was surrounded by very special people. Please keep Mike, Marian and Mikey in your prayers as the days and months ahead will be very difficult for all of them. I love you all and I can't wait until December when I can give you all big hugs. Madi, I miss you baby and always will.

Apple PickingAnother little boy that Alex went through transplant with, Manny also passed away on Friday Nov 7th. Please keep his family in your prayers as well.

Five years ago today, Alex was diagnosed with AML. It is a miracle that she is still here with us given how many times she has relapsed and since we still don't know for sure if her cancer has been cured. As happy as we are that she is doing so well, it's hard to rejoice in it when your friends that are as close to you as family are having to say goodbye to their children. Given this, I am not going to do a full update. Both of the kids are doing well. My niece, Charisse is doing well and we had a very good visit. I will leave you with lots of pictures to hold you over for a while. I'm sorry. I just can't do this right now. I will try again soon, promise.

Take Care,

Andrea, Todd, Alex and Nick
